According to the most recent data from Counterpoint Research, Xiaomi surpassed Apple to become the second-largest smartphone seller globally in terms of sell-through volume in August 2024, reaching a significant milestone. With Xiaomi topping Apple for the first time in three years, this accomplishment signifies an important shift in the global smartphone industry. Nonetheless, Samsung is still the world’s most popular smartphone brand.

Xiaomi’s impressive rise in the global market can be attributed to several factors, including robust growth in emerging markets and the strategic introduction of affordable smartphone models. The launch of the Redmi 13 and Redmi Note 13 series 5G smartphones, priced under $200 (approximately Rs. 16,000), played a crucial role in this success.

These models have resonated well with consumers in key markets such as India, Latin America, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East, helping Xiaomi capture a significant market share.

The latest figures from Counterpoint Research’s Smartphone 360 Monthly Tracker reveal that Xiaomi’s growth has been particularly pronounced in the lower price segments, where the company has seen substantial demand.

Despite the flat shipment volumes in August, Xiaomi’s performance was bolstered by Apple’s seasonal decline in shipments ahead of the anticipated iPhone 16 series launch. This timing allowed Xiaomi to seize the opportunity and secure the second position in monthly sell-through volumes.

The report also highlights that Xiaomi’s growth trajectory has been strong throughout the first half of 2024, with a 22 percent year-over-year increase in sales volume. Although growth is expected to moderate in the latter half of the year due to base effects, Xiaomi is projected to maintain strong double-digit growth for the entirety of 2024.

Apple, on the other hand, is expected to rebound with the launch of the iPhone 16 lineup. The new series is anticipated to drive a surge in Apple’s sales, potentially allowing the company to regain its position as the second-largest smartphone vendor in the coming months.

The competitive landscape of the global smartphone market continues to evolve, with Xiaomi’s aggressive expansion and strategic product launches positioning it as a formidable player. As the market dynamics shift, it will be intriguing to see how other major brands like Samsung and Apple adapt and respond to these changes.

In summary, Xiaomi’s recent achievement of surpassing Apple in global smartphone sales underscores the brand’s growing influence and market presence. With its focus on affordable yet feature-rich smartphones, Xiaomi is well-positioned to continue its upward trajectory and challenge the status quo in the global smartphone industry.
