OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has confirmed plans to establish its first office in India by the end of 2025. The office will be located in New Delhi, marking a major milestone in the company’s global expansion strategy.
The announcement was made by Jake Wilczynski, Head of Communications for the Asia-Pacific region at OpenAI, via LinkedIn. According to him, India has quickly become one of OpenAI’s most important markets, ranking as the second-largest user base for ChatGPT worldwide, only behind the United States.
Why India Is Key to OpenAI’s Growth
India’s rapid digital transformation and strong developer ecosystem have made it a critical market for AI adoption. Wilczynski revealed that the number of weekly active ChatGPT users in India quadrupled in just the past year.
Additionally, India ranks among the top five developer markets globally, with the highest number of students using ChatGPT for learning and innovation. This growing demand highlights the country’s potential to drive AI adoption across industries like education, enterprise, and public services.
Current Presence and Hiring Plans
At present, Pragya Misra, Head of Public Policy, is the only OpenAI employee based in India. She has been instrumental in building relationships between OpenAI, the government, and other stakeholders.
However, the company has already started expanding its workforce in the country. OpenAI recently listed three job openings in India, all in the sales department:
- Account Director, Digital Natives
- Account Director, Large Enterprise
- Account Director, Strategics
These roles reflect OpenAI’s push to strengthen its partnerships with Indian enterprises and accelerate its adoption in both consumer and B2B markets.
New Subscription Plan for Indian Users
To make ChatGPT more accessible, OpenAI also introduced a new affordable subscription plan, ChatGPT Go, priced at ₹399 per month.
This plan provides users with added benefits compared to the free version, including:
- Higher message limits
- Support for larger file uploads
- Expanded image generation capabilities
The introduction of ChatGPT Go complements the existing premium plans ChatGPT Plus (₹1,999/month) and ChatGPT Pro (₹19,900/month), offering more affordable AI access to India’s growing user base.
Conclusion:
The launch of OpenAI’s New Delhi office by 2025 is expected to significantly boost its local operations, partnerships, and innovation ecosystem. With India already emerging as a leading hub for AI users and developers, OpenAI’s presence will likely accelerate the integration of advanced AI solutions into business, education, and public services.
As AI adoption continues to rise, this move positions India as a crucial player in the future of OpenAI’s global growth.
